DescriptionWhat is Finasteride?Finasteride is an oral prescription medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It can also be used to relieve male pattern-pieces, treat male urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and reduce the need for surgery in acute cases of acute urinary retention due to BPH. Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme called type II 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that can cause symptoms such as muscle loss, muscle tenderness, pain, and swelling in men with BPH. Finasteride can be taken with or without food. If you take Finasteride after a meal that contains fat, it may reduce the amount of DHT absorbed. However, if you are a high-fat meal, it may reduce the amount of Finasteride that is absorbed. Do not take Finasteride if you are taking oral finasteride (Proscar) or are taking other medications. Finasteride can cause serious side effects such as sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis, and bone loss. It is recommended that you follow the precautions and warnings listed at the end of this leaflet. Talk with your doctor or midwife if you have any questions or concerns regarding Finasteride.
